It’s been over 3 months since I last released an update for the mapsets and a lot of data has come in. So much, in fact, that I got bogged down integrating a few large datasets of BC trails. I decided it best to release the work I had done so far and continue plugging away at the integration process. No new tiles for Northwest Topos this time, only an update to match the trail contents with Northwest Trails.

It’s been a while since the last update – 2-1/2 months, which I believe is a longer period in-between releases than ever before for this project. There are a lot of reasons for that, primarily that I’ve been busy and winter is in general a slow time for people hiking and submitting trails. However, I also wanted to focus on overhauling the background map for Northwest Trails (and Northwest Snow Trails). Way back when I started this project I wanted a fast solution so I could quickly locate trails against a background map. In my haste I just grabbed the background from one of my old Garmin mapsets and trimmed it down, then soon forgot about it. Later I was reminded about that when Garmin changed the way that background maps were handled in Mapsource and background map zoom levels could no longer overlap with the detailed map zoom levels. Still, I needed a quick solution and so I just reduced the resolution of the background map to remove that overlap. That left Northwest Trails with a fairly ugly and inaccurate background map, but it was better than nothing, plus it didn’t upload to the GPS anyway.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I was reminded by a mapset user that I was still using Garmin data and that as a result I was in copyright violation. I realized that I was guilty of a transgression I had never intended, and so I have spent the time since then overhauling the background in the mapset. Using public data, I’ve created a background tile that is far more detailed than what was in the project previously. In fact, it’s no longer really a background map. You’ll see that it is actually a detailed map that can be uploaded to the GPS (although you’ll likely want to avoid doing so). Handling the background this way allows me to avoid the ugly low-resolution map seen in previous releases of Northwest Trails as I can give it zoom levels that overlap with the other dedicated trail map tiles. Just be careful when selecting tiles to upload to your GPS that you avoid the “Detailed Background” tile (unless you really need and want to have that data loaded).
This new background map has also been extended to Northwest Snow Trails. However, because of the work that went into creating it, I haven’t had time to increase the coverage area for Northwest Topos. Rest assured, though, that I’ve kept NW Topos up to date by updating all of the tiles with trail changes in them.

It’s been a couple of months since I last updated Northwest Trails, but that doesn’t mean that there hasn’t been work going on behind the scenes. The most significant change this time around was a complete overhaul of the Pacific Crest Trail and extension of it through California to the Mexican border. This main reason for doing this was for completion’s sake; I always felt that it was arbitrary to cut this trail off at the Oregon border simply because it then exits what would be technically considered the northwest. Another reason for the overhaul is that because the trail is so significant and runs along the Cascade Crest, it in many places falls along the border of various counties, National Forests, etc. This led to a lot of conflicting data as each of these entities had their own versions of the trail in their GIS data. It was simply time to clear up some of the duplication and errors this caused.
One thing to note is that even though the trail continues through California in the dataset and will be visible on the GPS when loaded, I still only show a portion of California in the Mapsource mapset and thus a long section of the trail cannot be viewed on the computer. I hesitate to expand the map as I am not prepared to add California as a whole to the dataset, and expanding would also mean overhauling the background map. I’ll wait to see what the reception is to this addition before I decide if I need to change this.

Winter is upon us and it was time to dust off the Northwest Snow Trails mapset and get it ready for winter fun!
The previous version of this mapset was compiled using an old-style background map that caused display issues in recent updates of Garmin MapSource. This has been corrected and, while it means a less-detailed background map, it also means a smaller download size and proper display of the data in BaseCamp as well as MapSource.
Please note that there are a number of updates to this release that didn’t make it into the release notes below. These were primarily those submissions made to Northwest Trails that were also marked as winter-friendly. In those cases, the contribution was noted in the Northwest Trails release notes but not in the Northwest Snow Trails notes. I’ll make sure to break out the snow-related aspects of all future releases in order to better track changes to this mapset.
Lastly, I have made some additional strides in automating the process of updating this mapset, but as with any change there is a good chance of initial kinks. Please let me know if you see any errors in the data, most notably trails that should/shouldn’t be included in the data.

Starting with this release, I am breaking out the notifications of Northwest Topos updates from the Northwest Trails mapset updates. I figured that this would allow people to follow changes in the various mapsets more easily as well as make it easier for me to discuss mapset-specific issues involved with a given release.
For example, I wanted to talk a bit about the discussed use of metric elevation data in the Canadian portions of this mapset. It turns out that it is not as easy as I had thought. While it is straightforward to generate metric rather than statute data for a given map tile and just as straightforward to compile that map tile with metric rather than statute data, the whole process seems to blow chunks when you try to mix metric and statute tiles in a single mapset. I’ll continue to research the problem and see if there are any solutions out there.
Speaking of Canada, it looks like Christmas plans will be taking me to Calgary this year (home to my wife’s mother’s side of the family), so don’t be surprised to see an emphasis on new tiles in that area for the next release!

This month has seen a ton of British Columbia data come in which is great since I’ve just started adding BC tiles to the Northwest Topos mapset. Since the Canadian data comes from different sources than the US data, the process of putting the map tiles together differs a bit from what I have been doing so far, so please let me know if you run into any errors.
I’ve also been working on getting a 256-color custom type file put together to improve the visibility of polygons on units that only support 256 colors (such as the Garmin GPSMap 60CSx). This new type selection is now available in the mapset installer. (Individual type files are now also available for direct download from the download pages so that you can quickly and easily swap them out without having to reinstall the mapsets, and so that those installing on a Mac are not restricted to the single type file that the Mac installer can contain.) The new 256-color type file is designed to help improve the visibility of lakes and other water polygons against areas such as National Forests on these units. Things still aren’t ideal, so please provide any feedback you may have so that I can continue improving the visibility of the maps on all units.
